Char Classroom in Kurigram

A charitable investment for your Akhirah.

Our classroom stands on a raised earth platform, with a timber or steel frame, metal roof and walls, and a veranda for the monsoon. Desks, a board, a book cupboard, a latrine and a rainwater tank complete a room for 40 to 60 children.

Why Kurigram

A char is a river island made of silt, reshaped by the Brahmaputra, and families plan their lives around water and erosion. For a classroom here, the ground beneath the lessons matters as much as the roof.

Our research sets out who the classroom will serve, why it's needed in Kurigram, and how the raised classroom fits into village life. Read the research

The research behind this project

Kurigram's chars are river islands that can flood, and can wash away. So this classroom stands on a raised base, and it can be taken down and moved if the river shifts.

Building for the chars

Friendship, which works on Bangladesh's chars, builds raised platforms for homes and schools that can be dismantled when an island erodes. Its approach is the reference for this classroom's design and care.

The raised base keeps the room above floods. Erosion is a different risk, so moving the room is planned and paid for.

Schools on the chars

The Daily Star reported in November 2022 that Kurigram has around 400 chars, with roughly 169 primary schools and five high schools across them.

The classroom

Room for 40 to 60 pupils, on a £6,500 budget.

The plan covers teaching, the school committee, routine repairs and moving the room if the island erodes. We check it after the first monsoon, and get in touch again twelve months after it's finished.

Where

We're looking at the Brahmaputra chars around Chilmari, including Shantiram, Fakir Mohammad and Guzimari. On the site visit, our partner checks access to teaching, the ground and how a move would work, then confirms the char, the school committee and the raised plot before building.

Questions

What is a share?

This project is split into 100 shares of £65. Each one pays for a hundredth of the build, alongside everyone else who joins. You can fund one share or as many as you like.

How will I hear about it?

We'll email you at each stage, from the first site visit to the day it opens, with photos along the way.

What if the cost changes?

We work hard to price every project accurately. The price of a share covers its part of the build, its delivery and reporting, and our own costs. If it's going to cost more, we'll tell you up front and talk it through with you. If something unplanned comes up during the build, we'll talk it through with you and agree how to handle it together.
