Questions

Questions about SDQA projects

Straight answers for anyone funding a share or building a project of their own. If yours isn't here, get in touch and we'll answer it.

Funding a share

How does funding a share work?

Each project we're building is divided into shares, and you can fund one or as many as you like. The project's page shows what a share costs and how many are left.

Browse the projects
Is a share an investment?

No. A share is a gift towards building that project. You don't own any part of it, and there's no financial return.

Do I get anything to show for my share?

Yes. You'll get updates on the project as it moves along, and photographs and the location when it's finished. When your project is completed, we'll email you, and your certificate will be ready to download from your dashboard.

Does a share put a name on the plaque?

No. A plaque holds one name, so it belongs to whoever builds the whole project.

When does building start on a shared project?

Work can start before every share is funded. We start once the project is ready and enough is in place to begin, and we'll tell you the next stage once its site checks and delivery plan are confirmed. The funding bar counts shares; it isn't a building timetable.

Your own project

Can I build my own water well, masjid or home?

Yes, tell us what you have in mind and who it's for. We start with a free conversation and some initial research on where it could go.

Tell us your idea
Do I need a clear idea first?

No. Come to us with whatever you have, even if it's only the name of someone you'd like to honour. Working out the rest is our job.

How soon will you get back to me?

We'll call you within one working day. That first call is simply to talk your idea through.

Do I have to pay for my project all at once?

No. We start with a free conversation and some initial research, and then a deposit confirms the price, the location and the detailed planning. 30% of the total starts the build, and we agree the rest with you, in full or in stages.

Can I build a project with my family?

Yes. You can fund it together between you, and decide as a family whose name goes on it.

Whose name goes on a whole project?

Its plaque shows the name, and you'll get a certificate once it's completed. We'll take the wording from you at our first conversation.

After funding

What will I see once the work starts?

Updates as the build goes on, then a completion report with photographs and the location once it's finished. The report is written up for every project, shared or your own.

Will anyone check on the project later?

Yes. About twelve months after completion, our partners on the ground find out how things are going, and we pass their news on to you. Where a project includes its own verification visit, its page says so.

Can I see work you've already finished?

Yes. The report on our finished hand pump in Mika, Uganda, includes photographs from the site.

Money and terms

Why is SDQA a Community Interest Company?

We chose to be a CIC deliberately. By law our profits go back into the work, under an asset lock. Your gift funds the project and the cost of delivering it well, with the outcome reported back to you. The reward of your gift belongs to you and Allah. Our structure has no bearing on that.

Is my share protected?

If its project can't go ahead, we move your share to a similar project, so the intention you gave it with is still honoured, and we'll let you know about the change. You can ask for a share to be refunded up until work on its project starts; once work has begun, it's committed to the project.

Which payments are refundable?

A deposit for your own project can be returned up until the work starts, and a share can be refunded if you ask before work on its project starts. Tell us promptly about a genuine mistake, such as paying twice or paying the wrong amount, and we'll refund it. Email support@sdqa.org.uk with your payment reference, and never send card details by email.

Can my own project be refunded?

Yes. Your deposit can be returned up until the work starts. The terms set this out in full.

Read the terms
Will the price change after I start?

We work hard to price every project accurately, and if anything changes you'll hear it from us first. The price you see covers the build, its delivery and reporting, and our own costs. If we can see it'll cost more, we'll tell you up front, and if something unplanned comes up during the build, we'll talk it through with you and agree how to handle it together.

How are payments taken?

Through Stripe, which processes card payments securely. We never store your full card details.

SDQA itself

Who is behind SDQA?

SDQA was founded by Irfan Akram and Riaz Hussain, who are both funding projects of their own through it. Our story has more about them.

What is a Community Interest Company?

It's a company that exists for the good of the community, and its assets can only be used for that purpose. SDQA is registered as one.

Who does the building?

Delivery teams we've vetted do the building on the ground. You see their work in the updates and in the completion report.
