Family Home in Zinda Jan, Herat
A charitable investment for your Akhirah.
Two rooms, a kitchen, a washroom and a veranda give a household somewhere to cook, sleep and live together again. The home covers about 31 square metres.
Why Zinda Jan
In October 2023, Siah Ab's homes lay in rubble after the Herat earthquakes. Rebuilding has happened since.
Our research sets out who the family home will serve, why it's needed in Zinda Jan, and how the family home fits into village life. Read the research

The research behind this project
In October 2023, earthquakes in Herat reduced whole villages to rubble. This project builds one family a strong, warm home on land that's theirs outright.
What the earthquakes did
UNHCR described the village of Siah Ab reduced to rubble in October 2023. A United Nations assessment in February 2024 counted 49,578 damaged homes across the affected area, 13,516 of them destroyed, and more than 275,000 people affected.
Who still needs a home
Some rebuilding has happened. Amu reported a finished township at Siah Ab in January 2024, and the Herat recovery programme's 2024 report records rebuilding across its area. So our partner looks at each family's situation today, and any help they've already had, before choosing a household.
The land, and who owns it
The home goes on the family's own plot if they have one. If they don't, the village shura provides land, and the survey records it before building. When the keys are handed over, the home belongs to the family outright, and the completion report records the family, the plot and the location.
The checks on site cover current need, any help already given, heirs and any dispute over the plot. The plan also covers upkeep and putting right any faults in the builder's work.
The house
Two rooms, a kitchen and washroom, and a veranda. Tied walls, reinforced foundations, an insulated roof and a flue for the stove. The local engineering design settles the materials and structure before building starts.
The site visit
Our partner confirms the village, the family and the plot with the shura.

Questions
What is a share?
This project is split into 100 shares of £70. Each one pays for a hundredth of the build, alongside everyone else who joins. You can fund one share or as many as you like.
How will I hear about it?
We'll email you at each stage, from the first site visit to the day it opens, with photos along the way.
What if the cost changes?
We work hard to price every project accurately. The price of a share covers its part of the build, its delivery and reporting, and our own costs. If it's going to cost more, we'll tell you up front and talk it through with you. If something unplanned comes up during the build, we'll talk it through with you and agree how to handle it together.
